Sardinia coast to coast: the guide
Sardinia is one of the most fascinating regions in Italy: an island extremely rich in landscapes, charm, towns and different atmospheres. You'll find crystal-clear seas, wild inland areas, mountain-top villages, and vibrant cities to explore – which is exactly why a coast-to-coast tour of Sardinia is the perfect idea for your next trip.
We've put together an ideal itinerary for adventure seekers and lovers of Sardinia's inland heart, as well as for those who simply want to enjoy some time by the sea and relax on some of the island's most beautiful beaches: 8 stops for your Sardinia coast-to-coast journey – an unforgettable adventure.
1st stop: Cagliari, the starting point
The Sardinia coast to coast 2025 itinerary begins, naturally, in Cagliari – one of the island's most beloved cities. Top attractions include:
-
The Castello District. The historic heart of the city, a labyrinth home to some of Cagliari's most beautiful monuments.
-
Poetto beach. A little paradise stretching for 8 km, perfect for both relaxation and entertainment.
-
The Citadel of Museums. The city's museum centre, perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in the local culture.
-
The Bastion of Saint Remy. A monumental 19th-century fortification offering a unique view of the Gulf of Angels.
If you plan to stay a few days and uncover the city's secrets, we recommend booking a room at UNA Hotels T Hotel Cagliari. This 4-star hotel is in the city centre, offering a prime location and services like a fitness room, private garden, and a shuttle service available on request.
The real highlight is the wellness centre – a peaceful haven with a Turkish bath, emotional showers with chromotherapy, Finnish sauna, and a relaxation area with a herbal tea corner.
2nd stop: Barumini, the UNESCO heritage site
Barumini is a must-visit if you want to experience the true spirit of Sardinia and its ancient roots. This small town of just over 1,000 residents is home to Su Nuraxi – an archaeological site discovered in the 1950s, featuring an impressive nuraghe complex. This unique site was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 1997 due to its historical importance.
3rd stop: Laconi, between history and nature
The third stop is Laconi, which you can reach by car or via the charming Trenino Verde, a narrow-gauge railway that departs from Mandas and travels through some of Sardinia's most beautiful scenery. One of the most famous attractions of the town is the Menhir Museum in Aymerich Palace: here you can find the famous Menhirs, monolithic statues dating back to the Neolithic and shrouded in mystery.
Nature lovers will enjoy Aymerich Park, a lush green area in the heart of the village featuring a wide variety of flora and fauna, including centuries-old trees. Entry is free, and guided tours are also available.
4th stop: Desulo – Gateway to the Gennargentu
If you're wondering what to see in the hinterland of Sardinia, one place to definitely include in your coast-to-coast itinerary is Desolu, which is located almost 900 metres above sea level. From this characteristic Sardinian village there are several paths to explore the Gennargentu and excursions that lead to Punta La Marmora, the highest peak in Sardinia.
5th stop: Gavoi, the village on the lake
The most striking feature of Gavoi, the 5th stop of our trip to Sardinia by car, is its deep connection with nature: on the one hand, the mountains of Gennargentu. On the other hand, the waterways and Lake Gusana make it a real little paradise to discover. The village of around 3,000 people lies in a region rich in biodiversity – over 3,000 hectares of woodland with holm oaks, holly, cherry trees, walnut trees and much more.
Gavoi charms visitors with its panoramic setting at over 800 metres, its elegant granite houses, and some of Sardinia's most traditional delicacies – especially Fiore Sardo DOP pecorino cheese.
6th stop: Bosa, the rainbow town
Bosa is a must-see on any Sardinian itinerary. It's especially known for the colourful Sa Costa district, where brightly painted houses climb the slopes of Serravalle Hill. At the top sits Malaspina Castle, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area. In addition, here you will find the Temo, the only navigable river in the entire region, next to which you can walk along the evocative Lungotemo promenade.
7th stop: Alghero, the city of coral
Alghero is one of the most famous places in Sardinia, so you can't miss it on your long journey. Known as the city of coral, it offers history, culture, crystal-clear waters, and delicious cuisine. Unmissable sights include the historic centre, the Alghero Belvedere, Santa Maria Cathedral, the Palmavera Nuragic Complex, the Alghero Archaeological Museum, Lake Lamarmora, and the stunning Neptune's Grotto, which you can explore via a memorable boat tour.
8th stop: Stintino, the grand finale
This brings us to the grand finale of your trip to Sardinia from south to north, Stintino. This town was founded at the end of the 19th century by a group of fishermen from Asinara, and today, it's one of the most beloved Sardinian villages. There are many reasons: first of all, its beautiful beaches, from the famous La Pelosa to Cala Lupo, Ezzi Manno and Punta Negra; after visiting the picturesque old town, you can then dedicate yourself to an excursion to the famous Asinara National Park. Once a maximum-security prison, it is now an oasis where nature and biodiversity reign supreme.
And that's not all: in Stintino, there is the UNA Hotels Club Ancora Stintino, immersed in a park of over 10,000 hectares where you can always be in touch with nature. Spacious rooms, a panoramic terrace, direct access to the private Yacht Club beach and a prestigious restaurant are just some of the services of this 4-star property located just a few metres from the Sardinian sea.
A dedicated shuttle service is also available to reach the most famous local beaches, including La Pelosa and Il Gabbiano. Book your room to make the most of your Sardinia itinerary!
