What to see in and around Foligno: a must-see guide
Off the beaten track of the traditional Umbrian tourist routes, Foligno is a stunning city known as the "centre of the world", a nickname given by its inhabitants due to its artistic heritage and its location, traditionally considered the heart of Italy. There are many places of interest that can be visited both in the centre of the town and in the villages that surround it.
Piazza Grande, the medieval heart of Foligno
One of the must-see sights in Foligno is Piazza Grande, also known as Piazza della Repubblica, the heart of the town. Reachable with a short walk from UNA Hotels Villa dei Platani Foligno, it is the most vivid testimony of the medieval soul of the city. Moreover, it is precisely here that Saint Francis is said to have renounced all his possessions to pursue his religious mission. The square overlooks some of the most important buildings in Foligno: the Cathedral, the Palazzo del Podestà, the Palazzo Comunale and Palazzo Trinci.
Foligno Cathedral
Foligno Cathedral was built in 1113 and remains the finest example of Umbrian Romanesque architecture, particularly evident in its richly carved portal, crafted by masters Binello and Rodolfo. The interior, featuring bronzes attributed to Bernini and a bronze canopy above the high altar, has been open to visitors again since January 2025, after being inaccessible for nine years.
Palazzo Trinci and its museums
Palazzo Trinci is an obligatory destination for those who visit Foligno: built between the end of the fourteenth and the beginning of the fifteenth century, it takes its name from the lordship of the Trinci, who lived here dominating the city for over two centuries. Today, it has become the home of the Museum of Foligno, the place where you can discover the history of the city: on the first floor, you will find an evocative Gothic staircase, while on the second, you will find the Sisto VI room, with its frescoes and decorative motifs.
And that's not all: Palazzo Trinci houses several other museums, including the Civic Art Gallery, the Giuseppe Piermarini Room, the Archaeological Museum, and the Multimedia Museum of Tournaments, Jousts, and Games.
As for Palazzo Trinci opening hours and tickets, it is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 19:00. The entrance fee is €9, which may increase to €12 during special exhibitions. Find all the info on the official website.
The Palazzo del Podestà and the Press Museum
The Palazzo del Podestà dates back to the 13th century, but was completely rebuilt between 1546 and 1642 before being damaged by the earthquake of 1832. An interesting fact about this building: during the era of the medieval city-states, it served as a venue for popular assemblies. Today, it is home to the Printing Museum, and it was here that Johannes Numeister, a disciple of Gutenberg, printed the first edition of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy.
The Calamita Cosmica ("Cosmic Magnet"): contemporary art in Foligno
The Calamita Cosmica is a contemporary artwork located in the former Church of the Holy Trinity. It was created by the Ancona-born artist Gino De Dominicis. It is a gigantic skeleton 24 metres long and 4 metres wide, a reproduction of the human body with a bird's beak instead of a nose.
The work was made in secret in 1988 and exhibited in Grenoble, Naples, Paris, Milan and Florence, before being purchased by the Cassa di Risparmio di Foligno. The artwork, which is said to symbolise the connection between earthly and spiritual life, owes its name to the metal rod extending from the index finger of the right hand, pointing towards the sky. It can be visited on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at a cost of €6, which also includes admission to the CIAC Centro Italiano Arte Contemporanea ("Italian Centre of Contemporary Art").
Other points of interest in this city include the Oratory of Nunziatella, the Abbey of Sassovivo, the Oratory of the Crucifix, and the Church of Santa Maria Infraportas. How long does it take to see Foligno? To discover the main attractions, one day will be enough, but you can stay for a few days and take the opportunity to explore the surrounding villages, such as Bevagna, Montefalco, Rasiglia, and Spello.
The surroundings of Foligno: from Bevagna to Spello
Let's start with Bevagna, considered the birthplace of fabric and known for its impressive medieval city walls, with gates that are still perfectly preserved. Among the main points of interest in this town are the church and convent of San Francesco and the central Piazza Silvestri, overlooked by the church of San Michele, the church of San Silvestro Giacomo, the church of San Domenico and the Palazzo dei Consoli.
Inside the latter building is the Teatro Torti theatre, a small jewel with 140 seats entirely decorated by Domenico Bruschi and Mariano Piervittori.
Montefalco is located on the hill overlooking the plains of Topino and Clitunno, giving tourists a breathtaking view. Its medieval essence, reflected in the 13th-century walls, towers, and the town square, along with its calm and serene atmosphere, was also praised by the renowned writer Hermann Hesse.
Rasiglia, just a few kilometres from Spello, is known as the Little Venice of Umbria, as it was built around the waters of the Capovena spring, once the area's only resource. When spring arrives, the colours of this village shine, and the small town becomes the most popular destination for many tourists.
Spello is one of the most famous villages in this area, known for its long Roman and Lombard history and for its strategic position, between Umbrian plains and centuries-old olive groves. There are many places of interest to explore, such as the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Civic Art Gallery, and, above all, the Villa of Mosaics, considered one of the most extraordinary archaeological discoveries in all of Umbria.
Foligno and the charming villages that surround it are the ideal destinations for a relaxing and cultural holiday, but also for a short stay during a business trip. UNA Hotels Villa dei Platani Foligno, with its refined look and high-end services, is ready to host you and give you an unforgettable experience.
